Service users, carers, family and staff members of the Intensive Support Team (IST) came together on 27 November to look at ways we could improve this service, which is for people with learning disabilities.

Peterborough (IST) embarked on this pioneering service evaluation session using the Team Recovery Implementation Plan (TRIP) framework. Using this method, the workshop set about evaluating our service provision and monitoring the experience of those accessing our service. This was the first time that the TRIP framework had been used to look at how effective our service is within CPFT and it proved to be a valuable and productive experience for all involved.

With an abundance of cake, tea and coffee, the conversations flowed up until lunchtime. Visual material and physical rating scales assisted the group to identify strengths within different areas of the IST service and highlighted areas for improvement. Each reviewing group was balanced with service users, carers and staff which enabled the sharing of experiences from different standpoints.

An incredible array of bite-size delights were served up for lunch, followed, of course, by more cake!

The afternoon session brought the reviewing groups together in a feedback and action planning workshop. Together we created a post-it board representing all of the assets that exist within the team – a neon rainbow of talent and invaluable skills which may assist in our service provision in the future.

The day identified key areas to focus improvements on, including developing the ways in which the team instils hope for the future within those accessing our service and increasing the level of involvement from service users, peers, carers and family within the service and its development.

Feedback from the day indicated that all those who attended found it enjoyable, valuable and rewarding. It was reported that having an environment that enabled everyone to put forward their opinions and experiences was warmly welcomed. The IST staff welcomed the overall positive feedback from those who took part in this evaluation.

IST would like to say a big thank you to all those who came to the day and made it so successful. We are planning additional workshop groups to begin developing action plans and creative ideas to address the areas highlighted for improvements, all of which, of course, will involve cake!
