Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust has today congratulated Chair Julie Spence after it was announced that she is be appointed the next Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.

Julie has said she will use part of her time in the role to promote the work of CPFT.

She will succeed Sir Hugh Duberly who has been the Lord-Lieutenant since 2003.

Julie, who is the first woman to hold the title in the county and will take up her new role on 5 April, said: “It is a really great honour to become the next Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.

“Although I have served as a deputy since 2011, the appointment came as a complete surprise but one I was delighted to accept.

“I am very proud of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and I will continue to do everything to represent the area to the best of my ability.

“I will continue to be the Chair of CPFT, and I will use my time as Lord Lieutenant to get further recognition for the great work of the organisation, and the patients and service-users we care for with mental health issues and those with long-term conditions.”

Chief Executive Aidan Thomas said: “Everyone at CPFT should be rightly proud of Julie’s appointment. It is a wonderful honour for her, and a great opportunity to further the profile of CPFT.”

Julie was Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire until her retirement in 2010. She was awarded the OBE in 2006. She became Chair of CPFT, which provides mental health and community care services, in 2014. Julie is also a trustee of Ormiston Families, charity which helps to improve the lives of young people.

Lord-Lieutenants are appointed by the Government following approval by Buckingham Palace. A non-political role, they act as the monarch’s representatives in their lieutenancy.

The duties include escorting royal visitors when they visit the area, presenting medals and awards on behalf of the Queen and advising on honours nominations, and participating in civic, voluntary and social activities.
