Recovery College doubles number of courses as it gets ready to open new campus in Cambridge

Recovery College East is holding two open days and giving prospective students a chance to look round its brand new building in Cambridge.

The college, which is run by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT), is holding the two open days on Monday 16 September in Peterborough and on Wednesday 18 September at the new site in Cambridge.

Recovery College East was launched a year ago and has two sites in Cambridge and Peterborough. It offers a number of courses to help people develop new skills or increase their understanding of mental health challenges and recovery.

Following a hugely successful first 12 months, the college has decided to double the number of courses available. These courses include creative writing, getting a good enough night’s sleep, medication and managing and keeping your home.

Courses are free and are open to people over the age of 18 who have received or are receiving secondary services from CPFT, their supporters (family, carers and friends) and CPFT staff.

The open days will give students the opportunity to meet tutors, look round the college and find out more about the different courses on offer. They will also be able to register for courses on the day.

Tracey Tingey, Recovery College East Co-ordinator, (pictured above left) said: “We have had a fantastic first year and high demand has meant we are able to offer even more courses this year. Already for a number of students it has proved to be a springboard to help them apply for further and higher education. For some, it has also led to employment opportunities or on to professional training courses.”

Nat Barden (pictured above right) was a student at the college and this term she will be coming back but this time as a college tutor. Following a brain haemorrhage Nat had to learn to walk and talk again. She said: ”Overcoming my paralysis was a walk in the park compared to the depression I had to deal with and the darkness I encountered.

“The college helped to give me back my confidence and find hope. Everyone there is on the same page and I find it a great source of inspiration. I am really looking forward to tutoring. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to help guide other people and bring out their potential.”

The open days are being held on Monday 16 September in Peterborough between 10am and 4pm at Recovery College East, Silver Birch, Gloucester Centre, Morpeth Close, Peterborough PE2 7JU, and on Wednesday 18 September in Cambridge between 10am and 4pm at Recovery College East Block 24, Ida Darwin, Fulbourn, Cambridge CB21 5EE.

The new timetables and prospectuses are available electronically from www.cpft.nhs.uk or hard copies are available by e-mailing recoverycollegeeast@cpft.nhs.uk or via telephone on 01223 884431.
