Integrated bid for older people's services in Cambridgeshire

We are pleased to announce today (9 September 2013) that CPFT, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Mitie have reached the next stage in the tender process for older people's services in Cambridgeshire.

Our aim is to build a model around the needs of patients and users to provide high-quality, integrated and safe care in a sustainable way.  I will be meeting clinical and managerial staff in the older people’s services later this month and we will continue to talk to staff in our older people’s services in some detail as this bid proceeds.

We look forward to working with a range of partners, including local commissioning groups and stakeholders, over the next few months on our proposal to deliver improved services for older people and adult community services.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group’s (CCG) announcement on the 10 shortlisted bidders is on its website here.

GPs leading the CCG believe that older people’s health care can be significantly improved by different services working together to provide a joined up approach across geographic and organisational boundaries. As a result, the CCG has made improving care for older people a top priority.

Currently the focus is on measuring and paying for activity, such as hospital admissions. The CCG is proposing to dramatically change this focus to improve quality and outcomes through supporting investment in community services, improving the way in which services are delivered and changing the funding approach.

The new lead provider(s), will both provide services for older people, and be responsible for coordinating care for older people. Their remit will not just be community services, but will include responsibility for patients who have to be admitted to hospital as an emergency, older people with mental illness and end of life care. The contract will also include provision of some adult community services.
