Ewe beauties! Name the lambs at CPFT’s Darwin Nurseries
11 August 2016

There are two new animal arrivals at Darwin Nurseries in Cambridge – and you can name them!

Two Hebridean lambs are the latest creatures to reside at the farm shop and horticulture project which is run by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust.

The ewes are only a few weeks old and people are invited to Darwin Nurseries in Newmarket Road, Teversham, to see them and enter a competition to give them each a name.

Christine Millar, manager of Darwin Nurseries, which is staffed by volunteers and people with learning disabilities, said: “They are a lovely pair of lambs, really unusual and have settled in really well. Now they just need names, and we’re sure our customers will think of some great suggestions.”

The ewes were recently donated to the project and live with Smudge, an 18-month-old Hebridean ram.

Their keeper, Philip Ward, horticultural support worker, said: “The ewes and Smudge are quite a rare breed, but they have a lovely nature and they are a pleasure to look after.
“Our co-workers, especially two of them, Tom and Dean, have really enjoyed working with them.
“One of the lambs has five horns – and that’s very unusual indeed, and we are all really excited to see what names people come up with.”

Customers can visit the reception area of Darwin Nurseries and leave their ideas for names for the ewes.

The projects already has goats, chickens and pigs for people to see and find out more about. There is also a huge range of plants and vegetables to buy.

Earlier this year, a specially designed Hobbit House was opened at Darwin Nurseries. Visitors can look round the structure, which took seven weeks to build using a special mix of mud, straw, clay and sand. It has glass windows, a timber frame and a grass roof. Donated by Artisan Constructions, it would normally retail for £10,000.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust provides learning disability services along with mental health, integrated community and social care services.
