Super Charlotte heads on bike borrowed from mechanic - after car suffers puncture

Call the community nurse!
13 July 2018

When her car suffered a puncture - CPFT nurse Charlotte Woollard borrowed a mechanic’s bike to complete her morning rounds!

Charlotte thought Friday the 13th really had dealt her some bad luck when her tyre started to go flat when her day began in Willingham.

She managed to drive the car to a garage in Bar Hill, but when she was told she may have to wait for more than an hour, Charlotte left her car behind, hopped onto the mechanic’s bike, and pedalled off to see her patients.

She said: “I was seeing diabetic patients and I didn’t want to leave them waiting.
The mechanic offered me his bike so off I went.”

The 26-year-old community nursing sister has worked for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, which provides mental health and community healthcare services, for the past year.

She said: “On the bike I felt like a character out of Call The Midwife. What I
discovered is that there a lot of hills in Bar Hill, and on a sunny day my uniform
was very hot and sticky.”

Charlotte saw three patients before heading to the garage and collecting her
car – leaving the bike behind.

She returned to her colleagues at the North Villages Neighbourhood Team in
Histon to cheers from colleagues.

Team manager Abbie Astbury said: “We presented her with a nursing cycling proficiency certificate and a medal!

“In all seriousness she’s so committed to her patients – as all my team are – and didn’t want them to wait, although I think it might be a while before she gets back on a bike again.”
