Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) is encouraging people to take some ‘Time to Talk’ today as the Trust backs a nationwide mental health campaign.

‘Time to Talk Day’ is a scheme run by national organisation Time to Change which helps to break down the stigma around mental health and make it easier to get support.

Today, Thursday February 2, people across the UK are asked to take some ‘Time to Talk’ about mental health.

CPFT is helping thousands more people who need to talk to someone urgently about their mental health, whatever time of day or night, through its First Response Service, which was launched last September. It gives those in mental health crisis the opportunity to get access help quickly, by calling the team on 111 and selecting option 2.

The most recent data available shows there have been more than 4000 referrals, either people referring themselves or via a health professional.

Specially-trained mental health staff answer the calls, providing advice, support and signposting to other services available. The First Response Service also links people directly with two new out-of-hours ‘safe-havens’ called the Sanctuary.

Caroline Meiser-Stedman, Consultant Psychiatrist, First Response Service, said: "This week's national Time To Talk campaign has been useful to highlight how people need to look after their mental health. We are here for anyone who believes they are experiencing a genuine mental health crisis.

"They might be feeling low, or like they don't want to carry on any more, or like there are lots of frightening thoughts and feelings they don't fully understand.

"We'd rather people contacted us early, so we can get the best help for them.

"CPFT supports tens of thousands of people with their mental health every month and our First Response Service now offers even more people help, advice and support as when and they need it, 24/7, 7 days a week.

CPFT celebrated Time to Talk Day with a number of events held across the Trust. CPFT Chief Executive Aidan Thomas joined colleagues at Springbank Ward, Fulbourn, as they enjoyed a special cake baked by one of the patients.
